Smoke and fire control zones keep smoke and fire contained to one part of a building, so people can escape safely and firefighters can work. TECL installs the static barriers that create these zones, and the fire stopping that seals them into the structure.
Why control zones matter
In most fires, smoke is the main danger to life. Dividing large voids and open spaces into controlled zones stops smoke and fire travelling through ceiling voids, roof spaces and service routes, and keeps escape routes usable for longer.
What we install
- Static smoke and fire barriers, including Firefly flexible barriers (approved installer)
- Barriers that divide ceiling, roof and floor voids into zones
- Rockwool cavity barriers
- Fire stopping around ducts, pipes and cables passing between zones
- Remedial works where existing zones have been compromised
How we work
Our fire stopping division, led by Adam Duffield, installs barriers where the building’s fire strategy places them, to the manufacturers’ tested details, and records every barrier and seal for building control, your O&M manual and the golden thread. We’re certified under FIRAS and LPS 1531, and we issue an LPCB or FIRAS certificate for the job, whichever you prefer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a smoke and fire control zone?
An area of a building separated by fire-resisting barriers so smoke and fire are contained there, protecting the rest of the building and its escape routes.
Do you install automatic fire or smoke curtains?
No. We install static, permanently fixed barriers and the fire stopping around them. Automatic curtains are a specialist active system installed by others.
Do you work to the fire engineer’s strategy?
Yes. We install the barriers where the building’s fire strategy places them, using tested systems.
